Why the name “Word Compass?” Alma 37:45 Alma reflects upon the Liahona, or compass, as the director that brought our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land. He continues to make a connection by comparing the Liahona to the words of Christ.
The Liahona, when following the course as directed, lead our fathers to the promised land. The words of Christ, if we follow its course, promises us that it will carry us beyond this “vale of sorrow” into a “far better” land of promise.
When we understand the words of Christ, we can clear up the misconceptions that confuse us. We will learn that faith is not like a little seed, but that Alma 32 compares “the word” unto a seed. Instead of looking to the Holy Ghost for direction, we will follow Alma 37:45 by looking to the word, or the scriptures, for direction. We will not depend on man to reveal truths to us, but to the Holy Ghost to reveal truths to us. We will seek to be instructed by angels. And we will align our lives so that miracles similar to Joshua and the wall of Jericho, Moses parting the Red Sea, etc. can happen in our lives. As stated in Moroni 7:37:
“…It is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain.”
When we look to the words of Christ as a compass, the words of Christ will carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise. It is my only intention to enjoy that far better land of promise with all desire to know and follow the words of Christ.
