The gift that Christ, and the Father, is trying to give to us is the mind and will that unites them. It is the Spirit of God, or the mind and will of God. Christ pleads the case of the Nephites before the Father:
3 Nephi 19: 23
“23. And now Father, I pray unto thee for them, and also for all those who shall believe in me, that I may be in them as thou, Father, art in me, that we may be one.”
How is Christ in us? How is the Father in the Son, and the Son in us? Even in the intercessory prayer we see Christ trying to become one heart and one mind with the people, by asking the Father to disseminate His mind and will upon them (His Light), so that they may be one with Christ, as Christ is one with the Father. It is the mind and will of God that unites individuals.
The miracle occurs when the mind and will of God is given to the Nephites:
3 Nephi 19:25
“25. …and the light of his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus; and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed all the whiteness, yea, even there could be nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness thereof.”
We witness here a giving of light to the Nephites. It is the giving and receiving of the light of God that changes the countenance of the people. They are receiving the Holy Spirit. They are in the process of being clothed in glory and power, and that is why they begin to shine. The Lord’s light shining upon them signifies that they are receiving the mind and will of the Father and the Son (or the Spirit of God). That is how we can be one with them.
That is the only way a people of Zion can exist. Each one who desires to live in Zion must have the mind and will of God, or else they cannot be one with anyone. It is the mind and will of God that makes unification for an eternity possible. That is what is meant to be sealed. That is how families are sealed up and can be together forever, and there is no other way.
How do we get that mind and will? It is found in the scriptures (at first). Then angels teach more. Finally Christ appears. One builds upon the next. You cannot skip the scriptures and go directly to angels. Is it a surprise that even when angels visit man, they quote scripture? Isn’t it funny that when Christ comes to the Nephites, it is an order of business to check the accuracy of their scriptures. The Lord told the Nephites that they forgot to include the words of the brown guy, Samuel the Lamanite. So the Lord told them to include it. Why is it so important to get the scriptures right, because it is the first tool everyone uses if they want to know God the Father and Christ.
I am suggesting that this is the purpose of the scriptures, to begin to upload the mind and will of God, in us, so that we can receive the Holy Ghost, or the mind and will of God. When we fail to search the words of Christ, we communicate that we don’t want to know the mind and will of God. We reject God, and seek vain things. We seek vain things to consume it upon our lusts when we don’t have the mind and will of God. Even good things can be made unclean, when we seek it outside of the mind and will of God.
Often, people wish that they could get out of debt, then they could help others, is what they say. We often think that the problem we have is debt. That is not the pressing problem of us saints. The pressing problem is that we lack an eternal perspective. That is what the mind and will of God produces, perspective. Once we have obtained the mind and will of God, then we can command all things because we too would not ask that which is contrary to the will of God.
Rather than being concerned with the debt problem, we… first seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then all these things shall be added unto you (3 Nephi 13:33). Seek the mind and will of God. After obtaining the mind and will of God even if you choose wrong, nothing will be wrong for very long. That is the real problem, then the money problem seems to fade into the background as irrelevant.
Perhaps when you have obtained the mind and will of God (AKA: the Spirit of God), then the spirit that is within you is the Spirit that becomes Holy. Perhaps that is the plan of salvation, to make us equal heirs, a member of the Godhead, making our spirits Holy Ghosts in the form of our personage. Perhaps God and Christ are really trying to make you the third member of the Godhead. See if you can hear it in this scripture:
“61. Therefore it is given to abide in you; the record of heaven; the Comforter; the peaceable things of immortal glory; the truth of all things; that which quickeneth all things, which maketh alive all things; that which knoweth all things, and hath all power according to wisdom, mercy, truth, justice, and judgement.”
“46. The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.”
If the Holy Ghost is your constant companion, then how can it also be mine, or someone else’s, for that matter, all at the same time? Unless that spirit within us is what becomes sanctified, Holy, and constantly or unchangingly so.
Your bodies are tabernacles of clay. Tabernacle is greek for the word temple. The traveling temple of Moses was called a tabernacle, and was considered temporary, like our bodies are considered temporary. Your bodies are a temple of clay. A temple of God can only be a temple of God if it houses within it the Spirit of God, or the mind and will of God. Those with a tabernacle of clay, who does not house the Spirit of God, or the mind and will of God, within it, face big penalties.
1 Corithians 3:17
“17. If any man defile the temple of god, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.“
You are the temple of God because within you is the Spirit of God. We are warned not to defile the temple. Our temple can only be defiled if we do not obtain the mind and will of God.
When we get these basic principles of the Godhead right, we can begin to see the reasons we are told to read the scriptures. We begin to recognize our eternal potential. That is why a correct understanding of the Godhead is necessary to exercise faith unto life and salvation.
Otherwise, we will seek to consume it upon our lusts. We will not seek out righteousness. All that we do will be in the likeness of the world, which is likened unto an idol (D&C 1:16). We will seek to get out of slavery and the bondage of financial debt, claiming to want to serve a God, whom we don’t care to know first. Thus we consume it upon our lusts. That would be a disaster.
It is my opinion that money never solved money problems. That is why I believe that we cannot really keep the second great commandment, without having kept the first great commandment. We must first love God with heart, mind and soul. Service and charity is merely a bi-product of someone who first loves God. When we do it backwards, we can serve others for the wrong reasons, and it will not make you love God, or even know God. Christ told those who claimed to have cast out devils in His name, or done mighty miracles in His name to “…depart from me, for I never knew you.”
“3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Life eternal rests upon what and who we know. No man can be saved in ignorance. Knowing God and Christ is defined here as being “Life Eternal.” It all begins with the words of Christ. Life eternal is obtained when we know God and Christ, when the mind and will of God is your mind and will. Then have we become at-one with Christ. This is the At-one-ment that is offered to us all. All of it rests upon the correct understanding of the attributes, perfections and characteristics of God.
