The grass roots foundation of the making of a wise-man is based on the words of Christ. Any and every wise-man will be founded on and grounded in the words of Christ. That is a fundamental knowledge that is prerequisite to added light and knowledge.
2 Nephi 32:2-3
“2. Do ye not remember that I said until you that after ye had received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?
3. Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.”
How do we think we can break through to the heavens without a knowledge of the words of Christ? If angels speak the words of Christ, which are unfamiliar to you, how will that visit from an angel affect you, especially if you are ignorant of the words of Christ?
We know that such an angelic visit to Laman and Lemuel, beating up on Nephi, had a very short lived impact on their choices. Laman and Lemuel never read the scriptures. They tried to make excuses for not understanding. They said that God “…maketh no such thing known unto us.” If we want the same result as Laman and Lemuel, simply follow that example of excuses.
We also know that Alma the younger had a similar visitation initially, he and the sons of Mosiah then repented of their foolishness and began a fourteen year effort to learn and teach the words of Christ. They chose to not hide behind excuses like Laman and Lemuel. It wasn’t until later that the very same angel that threatened Alma and the sons of Mosiah returned with glad tidings of great joy. Their sacrifice had been approved of the same angel that threatened their lives. That is the gospel, or the good news. If we begin a study now, we too can receive an equal inheritance, despite when we came to labor in the vineyard. It will always be through the study of the words of Christ. There is no other way. There is no short cut. Wether you read it yourself or have someone kind enough to read it to you, it doesn’t matter how you have come to attain knowledge of the words of Christ, just that you came to the knowledge of the words of Christ.
Those who choose not to come to the knowledge of the word, have their prophesy too:
2 Nephi 32:4-5
“4. Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark.
5. For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.”
The language of entering in by “the Way” is chosen precisely to point to Christ. Christ claimed to be “the way, the truth and the light.” One who does not have an understanding of the words of Christ cannot enter in by Christ (enter in by the way). Instead, they are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark.
As a boy, it never made much sense how teaching the words of Christ could have the impact of saving an entire population. I would question in my mind, “what are we supposed to do, …read scriptures all day?” Perhaps a similar thought had entered into your mind. Initially, it will take such a concerted effort, that it may feel like you have been studying all day long. We can understand such an athletic analogy of eating, drinking and sleeping a sport, but when it comes to the word, such an analogy seems pointless an inapplicable.
But the principle has the same effect in scripture study as it does in sports. Eating, drinking and sleeping the words of Christ generates muscle memory and familiarity with the object of the words- Christ. Muscle memory takes away the necessity for a command from the the brain to tell the muscle how to respond. Muscle memory works as if the brain was right there at the muscle, and so it responds exactly the same as if the brain had sent a command, just no lag-time in sending the message. The response time is negligible and instantaneous. Response becomes reflexive and instinctive, just like a kung-fu master.
The analogy of the body is plain and clear to Gods expectation of Zion being of one heart and one mind. Muscle memory is the same to a martial artist, to a doctor, or to a pilot is has the same effect to a wise-man. That is the way God helps us escape the hands of Satan and the angels of Satan that do uphold his work. That is how God intends to rescue us from the debtor society we currently belong to. That is how God makes Zion a group of people with no poor among them.
If we are to be commanded in all things, the idea of muscle memory is lost, and every portion of the body is slow to act, and slow to respond. When we do not study the words of Christ, then we do not have the mind and will of God in us- no muscle memory. That is when we are left to be acted upon. That is why such a body that must needs be commanded in all things is compared to a sloth. The enemy can sorely damage such a body.
When the words of Christ is planted in all parts of the body of Christ, the response time is negligible. Satan has no power. Zion will be of one heart and of one mind because the words of Christ is mastered in all locations, at all body parts- muscle memory. The hands need not tell the feet what to do. The right foot acts without the left foot. And the result is one. There is no conflict. The body is not entangled or tripping all over itself. Such a body can move with agility, strength, accuracy and speed. Peace abounds. God is at the helm.
If ye are not one, ye are not mine, saith the Lord. Being a part of the body of Christ requires familiarity with the words of Christ for the purpose of knowing the mind and will of God, that the mind and will of God is within you- Muscle memory. Why would God intrust you with all that he hath? The same reason why he is given trust by all things, because you will be like him. You will not ask anything contrary to his will.
Why do we not have claim to all that he hath? We continually ask contrary to his will. Taking it a step further, since we fail to seek the mind and will of God in the study of the words of Christ, since we do not eat, drink and sleep the words of Christ, we have no idea what the mind and will of God is. Thus we continually ask to consume it upon our lusts.
Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do (2 Nephi 32:3). That is Muscle Memory.
