Moroni writes to instruct all who have ears to hear, why angels would cease. Angels have a purpose, but what that purpose is, often gets misinterpreted. The purpose of this blog is to point to the scriptures to teach us what we must do to receive angels once again.
Why Angels Cease?: The word Angel comes from the Greek “Euangellion,” meaning: gospel, or good news, or good message. The word Angel simply means “messenger.” The messenger is one who conveys a message from the presence of Christ. When a people refuse to hear the words of Christ, they will not hear an Angel who presents more of the words of Christ. Rejecting the words of Christ is defined as lacking faith.
So why would Angels cease? Moroni gives us insight to why Angels cease to appear:
“37. Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain.”
Angels have ceased because of “unbelief.” Unbelief is not the absence of belief. Everyone, no matter who you are, believes in something. Even “not believing” is a form of belief. However, unbelief is simply “wrong beliefs.” For example, thinking that you can continue to eat large quantities of ice-cream on a daily basis, without getting fat, is an unbelief (a wrong belief). And unbelief is due to the lack of faith (ignorance toward the words of Christ), since “…it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men.”
Purpose of Angels: Angels are purposed to provide Adam (men and women) with further light and knowledge. Adam didn’t know why he offered sacrifices, and Angels appeared to instruct him as to why it was done. Angels are intended to add to your understanding, to give further light, to give further instruction. But if men have failed to receive the preparatory light offered in the words of Christ, they cannot receive what Angels have to offer:
3 Nephi 26;8-9
“8. And these things have I written, which are a lesser part of the things which he taught the people; and I have written them to the intent that they may be brought again unto this people, from the Gentiles, according to the words which Jesus hath spoken.
9. And when they shall have received this, which is expedient that they should have first, to try their faith, and if it shall so be that they shall believe these things then shall the greater things be made manifest unto them.“
That is what Angels teach, “…the greater things.” But if you will not receive the words of Christ, than Angels only condemn.
Receiving Angels: Receiving Angels has a process. First be “ONE,” …and then Christ will send Angels. These two scriptures say so:
“27. Behold, this I have given unto you as a parable, and it is even as I am. I say unto you, be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine.“
So, if we ARE ONE, then we belong to Christ (We are His). Qualifying as being His, gives purpose for Christ to instruct us, first through the words of Christ, then through Angels, and finally, in person. The point here is, Angels only come after you are ONE. The words of Christ only assist men and women to be ONE. When we are ONE and HIS, then Christ sends Angels.
“31. And the office of their ministry is to call men unto repentance, and to fulfil and to do the work of the covenants of the Father, which he hath made unto the children of men, to prepare the way among the children of men, by declaring the word of Christ unto the chosen vessels of the Lord, that they may bear testimony of him.”
Conclusion: Be ONE through the words of Christ. When you are one, then you are Christ’s. Christ will then have value in sending Angles to instruct you in further light and knowledge.
We place too much emphasis on being right, when in reality we are all ignorant fools. When we are given a little authority, as we suppose, we consistently exercise unrighteous dominion. It is better to be ONE, than it is to be RIGHT! When we are one, then God can make us right.
Angels await our alignment to Christ’s will. We are only saved through Christ’s grace, after all that we can do. And, seriously, all that we can really do is to BE ONE! That is the point of the words of Christ that we have right now, make us ONE. When we qualify as ONE and HIS, then can the Lord see fit to make manifest “Greater Things.” So feast upon the words of Christ, let’s be ONE, so that messengers (Angels) can return to give us further light and knowledge.
