To expound is to present and explain a theory/idea systematically and in detail. To expound scripture requires revelation on the part of the presenter and the those who will receive it. I will attempt to Expound Abraham (not entirely, are you kidding me).
The introduction to Abraham, in the first two verses, offer wisdom toward our journey back to the heavens.
“1. In the land of the Chaldeans, at the residence of my fathers, I, Abraham, saw that it was needful for me to obtain another place of residence;
2. And, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed [great] knowledge, and to be a [greater] follower of righteousness, and to possess a [greater] knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace, and desiring to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God, I became a rightful heir, a High Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.”
I will address the bolded phrases above in the end, but will approach that portion with the frame of mind that precedes it.
Conflict: Abraham was in the land of Chaldeans, at his father’s residence. His father was Tera, who was directly involved in idol worship. There are old records from the Dead Sea Scrolls that tell of Tera’s occupation as a carver of idols. Abraham came to an awakening as he reasoned with his father that, if the idols were gods, and his father carved the idols, than that would make his father higher than the gods. This kind of reasoning made Abraham’s father angry, as it not only made sense, but it simultaneously questioned his father’s gods. Tera loved his gods more than his son, and he offered Abraham as an sacrificial offering, to be slaughtered. The first facsimile is depiction of Abraham on the throne, being offered by the idolatrous priest of Elkenah. So, it’s no surprise that in the first verse, Abraham was needful “…to obtain another place of residence.” You would too if your Dad was in the practice of sacrificing your life.
Right of the Fathers: Once Abraham was settled far away from the threat (his own family), he obtained peace and rest. Where Abraham turns his attention next is very interesting. Abraham said, “…I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same” When he was free from threat, Abraham sought out the blessings of the fathers, more than all his earthly possessions (and he was rich). Consider the things Abraham desired most:
- The blessings of the fathers
- The right to administer the blessings of the fathers
I’ll suggest that the blessings of the fathers are the promises made to the fathers (patriarchs). These are the same promises that Moroni told Joseph Smith that the hearts should turn to (JSH 1:36-39). They are the same promises that all who ever receive a covenant, when they receive it, they do so because of the promises made to the fathers before them, of the ancient times. Adam was the first to receive it. Enoch was another. It was because of the covenant to Adam, Enoch, and others, that Abraham was now being blessed. The blessings of the fathers is what Abraham sought out first.
Secondly, having the blessings of the fathers was not complete, and that is why Abraham also wanted the right to administer the blessings the same. To administer is to manage and be responsible for operating the blessings of the fathers. That would make any, possessing this, a father. Abraham had the ability to continue the line of the fathers (the patriarchal line).
The patriarchal line ended approximately ten generations before Abraham with Melchizedek. It went from father to son: Adam, to Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah, …to Melchizedek. But no one carried the right of the fathers from Melchizedek, because of apostasy and wickedness, …until Abraham came many generations later. Once Melchizedek set Abraham up with the right to administer the same, Melchizedek left, leaving Abraham to pass it down through his line, father to son. So much information jam-packed into these short lines of scripture.
Righteousness & Knowledge: Finally, the part I wanted to address. Abraham was a follower of righteousness seeking for great knowledge. What that means is that Abraham followed “revelation” given of heaven. Righteousness from the heavens is revelation from the heavens. Anyone who follows revelation from God is following righteousness, and that cannot be done through another man. All who do so, not only have a personal connection to heaven, they will obtain great knowledge as a result. As he gets more knowledge, he will obtain greater revelations, or righteousness from heaven. And if he follow that greater righteousness, he will get even greater knowledge, until he becomes a father, like Abraham.
Conclusion: Go to heaven. Get revelation. Be a follower of righteousness. Get the greater knowledge available. Follow no man.
