My wife and I were driving up North, this Christmas morning, pondering three chapters in 3 Nephi (16, 20, & 21)and came across a few verses that suddenly made clear sense. It was a KEY unlocking knowledge for me. I hope to persuade you to understand it as A Gift From Heaven’s Treasury.
Chapter’s 16, 20, and 21 reference the end of the day of the Gentiles, and the establishing of Zion by the repentant Gentiles and the remnant of the house of Jacob. A verse stuck out, and I want to expound it:
3 Nephi 20:22
“22. And behold, this people will I establish in this land, unto the fulfilling of the covenant which I made with your father Jacob; and it shall be a New Jerusalem. And the powers of heaven shall be in the midst of this people; yea, even I will be in the midst of you.”
There are three areas that I highlighted:
- A New Jerusalem: which refers to Zion specifically. That is the name of Zion, the New Jerusalem, as opposed to the city of Salem, which was taken up to heaven with Melchizedek, to join the city of Enoch.
- The Powers of Heaven: which refer to the higher ordinances that were promised to return when there was a place on earth for Christ to dwell among us (D&C 124:28). Through the ordinances of THAT temple, the power of godliness was to be manifest to men in fulness (D&C 84:19-25). This prophesies of the construction of a truly functioning temple, that Christ comes to dwell among a community of people in Zion.
- I will be in the midst of you: Christ promises that when the first two requirements are accomplished, Christ dwells among them in the flesh.
What I offer you as an explanation, regarding this scripture, was made clear to me by the Holy Ghost. The explanation was unlocked by a KEY of knowledge. The atonement is what gave Christ all the KEYS of the priesthood. Christ has all the KEYS because he descended below all, and then ascended above all, so he is all knowing. It is His knowledge that produced success in Gethsemane, and the resurrection of our Lord. All who come to Christ, Christ then offers His knowledge, so that you can overcome the world. That is the proper use of the term KEY. However, having KEYS by revelation does not give license to be above anyone. Truth is, KEYS should make you a servant!
This weekend, I have learned a valuable lesson, from the Holy Ghost, concerning revelation. Revelation is a communication between an individual and heaven. That communication is priesthood. But, it is by sad experience that we learn, that the nature and disposition of almost all men, when they are given a little authority, as they suppose, …they immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion. When priesthood is established through a connection to heaven, the bearer of that priesthood is only allowed to persuade, …or suffer the loss of their priesthood (D&C 121:37-46).
“41. No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;
42. By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—”
Conclusion: What you now know is what brought you to this point in your life. If you don’t find yourself in Zion, with a working temple, and Christ dwelling in the flesh, in your midst, …then you are missing something, and need to use your current position as a springboard, to boost you into Zion. Your foundation must be upon the words of Christ alone. If it is dependent upon an officer, that mindset is a foundation that will not provide redemption. Christ must be our foundation. Placing your trust solely in Christ will help you to realize that a serious study in the words of Christ will prove to be one of the greatest Gifts From Heaven’s Treasury!
