In the ascension of Isaiah, there were levels of the heavens described, with a throne in the center, angels on the right, and angels on the left. The concept points to the New-year Rite, specifically the Ritual Combat between light and dark. If you use The Light of the Body as your eye, you may see the path being laid out for your own ascension.
The Ascension of Isaiah is a short record, found in apocrypha texts. It describes Isaiah’s ascent, similar to 1 Nephi 11-14, when Nephi is taken up to a high mountain. In the heavens, Isaiah describes that there are thrones in the midst of each level of the three heavens, with angels on the left, and angels on the right. The left was symbolic of descending, and the right ascending. The idea of left being a position of descending, and right being the position of ascending, drew my mind to consider robes on the left shoulder as descending robes, and robes on the right shoulder as ascending robes, as a symbolic lesson of body types. Consider that Mom (on the left) is the provider of your body of descending, a body for your time on earth. Then consider turning your hearts to Dad (on the right), which offers a promise of a renewal of your body, in preparation for your ascending into the heavens (hearts turned to the fathers). Suddenly we are reminded once again of the temple New-Year Rite.
The concept points to the New-year Rite, specifically the “Ritual Combat” between light and dark. The New Year Rite consists of three elements: Creation/ Combat/ and Ascension. The main event is the Combat. The combat was always identified with the foot games, wrestling, jousting, and sword or spear fighting contests, etc. The King would participate, and would find himself loosing, and left for dead. However, he would change wardrobes, receive a renewal of life, and make a comeback from the dead, to win the entire tournament. This was the main event of all ancient culture’s New Year Rite, implemented at the New Year, or in other words, one of the corners of the earth.
The corners of the earth are a reminder of the Ritual Combat between the light and the dark. Light and dark are equal at the Equinoxes, Light overpowers the dark at Summer Solstice, and Dark overpowers the Light at Winter Solstice. Annually, we are reminded of the battle between light and dark. The waxing and waining of the moon (increasing in light and decreasing in light) is a monthly reminder of this Ritual Combat of light and dark. The daily rising and setting of the sun is a daily reminder of this Ritual Combat of light and dark as well. With all these reminders of the battle between light and dark, the Ritual Combat, it puts great emphasis of the importance of the changing of robes from the left shoulder to the right, for you to successfully overcome the dark once and for all, as a victorious King.
3 Nephi 13:22-24
“22. The Light of the Body is the eye; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24. No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.”
The Light of the Body is the eye? This doesn’t mean that your physical eye-ball is the light of the body. It isn’t referring to your physical eyes at all. It refers to using the spirit of the body as your eye. God has given us all light, and offers to give us more if we harken (or in other words: HEAR & KNOW) ….to the voice of the Lord (D&C 84:46). And if your eye is single to God, Nephi promises that God will fill your whole body with light! Can you see the changing of the robe (or your body), being offered, from the left shoulder to the right? Or from descending to ascending? We must be wise and use the light of the body as our eye, and have it’s single focus as the glory of God, or in other words intelligence, …or light and truth (D&C 93:36). Consider the eye being the windows of heaven, and suddenly the promise of tithing takes on an entirely different meaning, as the windows of heaven pours out a blessing, such that you have not room enough to receive it. It refers to being filled with light, not some financial anecdotal relief.
If you use The Light of the Body as your eye, you may see the path being laid out for your own ascension, and you’ll find your blindness replaced with sight. Sight is directly related to your ability to perceive light. Blindness is the inability to perceive light. If you cannot see light, you are in darkness, and you are blind!
“24. That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.
25. And again, verily I say unto you, and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you;”
The path of God is to be filled with light. When you are filled with light, there is no room for darkness in you. The natural consequences are that your sins are remitted, because the source of sin is darkness, and darkness no longer exists in you. When you are filled with light, you have eternal life. Consider how Nephi puts it:
2 Nephi 17-19
“17. Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.
18. And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive.
19. And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.
20. Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.
The path required of us is the path Christ has walked, and it’s result is eternal life. Christ is the prototype of all saved beings, according to Joseph Smith. If any of us expect to be saved, it will be done by walking the same path as Christ walked. And who better to advise you than the only person on earth who has walked that path, Christ! If you are to walk this straight and narrow path, you must do so by first obtaining a personal relationship with Christ. Verse 20 suggests “feasting upon the words of Christ.” I echo his suggestion. It will grow in you: “a perfect brightness of hope.” It will increase in you: “a love of God and of all men.” And it will be added unto you: “eternal life.”
Conclusion: Isaiah’s ascent unveil’s angels on the left descending, and angels on the right ascending. It points to robes on the left shoulder as a body of descending, and robes on the right shoulder as a body of ascending. In the New Year Rite, the Ritual Combat is a constant reminder of the battle between light and dark. But, more importantly, the changing of robes required for the King to overcome the world and ascend. With the robe on the correct shoulder, being filled with light, you are now prepared to overcome the world. It is done by feasting upon the words of Christ.
The Light of the Body is your spirit. Use your spirit as your eye, and fill it with light by exposing it to more and more light offered in the words of Christ. If you receive more of the word, your heart will soften, and you will be given a greater portion of the word, until you know all the mysteries of God, in full (Alma 12:10). Change from these tattered rags of ignorance, in exchange for bodies of light. They are being offered in the words of Christ right now.
